Fiona, 26 years

Three months ago, I was a normal 26 year old; building a career and juggling a busy social life.  I had no idea I had a cancerous tumour growing in me.  Like many diagnosed with ovarian cancer, there were few, if any warning signs.  So when a general check up turned into a series of ultrasounds and scans, I was more than a taken aback, I was scared. Only one day after my results came through I was in surgery undergoing surgery, along with biopsies and lymph node removal.  Now, a few months down the track, I’m not yet in the clear, but I’m finally coming to terms with this unexpected and uninvited cancer.

I have accepted that the mental challenge is just as significant as the physical challenge. I have realised that asking “why” is pointless and counting my blessings is much more productive. I have found a level of compassion and inner peace that I never knew I had. Most importantly, I have found that family and friends are the most essential pieces of my life. With them by my side, I can fight anything.
